style guide

Choosing what to wear for photos can be very stressful! The pressure to put everybody’s outfits together can feel pretty overwhelming. But finding that perfect outfit is easier with a little bit of guidance. I have put together some fun styling tips for our session to ensure you get the most out of your photos!

1. BE COMFORTABLE

The first and most important tip is to pick an outfit you feel comfortable in! If you’re wearing some painfully intricate get-up that is hard to take a breath in, you won’t feel very secure in the situation or within yourself - I’m talking from experience. If you pick an outfit that feels good to wear, you'll be more able to focus on feeling good and that will shine through the lens!

2. PICK YOUR COLORS

The key to coordinating picture perfect outfits for a couple or family session without looking too “matchy” is to start with a palette of 3-4 colors. I highly recommend selecting softer, lighter tones and more muted shades. Soft earthy tone colors such as: sage green, light muted blues, tans, and blush, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like gray, creams, and off-whites look the absolute best in photos. The soft neutrals always bring the focus back to the people in the photos and this timeless look is easy to pull together.

I advise staying away from very bright pinks, oranges, and reds because they bring out red hues in your skin. Another helpful tip is to avoid logos and words as they are distracting and will pull attention away from the main subjects.

3. LAYER THE COLORS

Once you have your palette colors picked out, the next step is to start with one person’s outfit and then work your way down to picking the next person’s outfit and then the next, and so on - taking into consideration the colors from the palette. Going in that order will allow you to layer the colors from the palette which makes a huge difference in tying in all the colors together and will give you a very aesthetically pleasing look. Remember the goal here is to coordinate, not match!

FOR HER:

There is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your photo session! Now is the time to bring out that romantic gown, tulle skirt, or flower crown you’ve always wanted to wear but haven’t had an occasion or excuse to wear it. Don’t be afraid to have some fun - you won’t regret it!

Long, full-length, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera! They create a look that is flattering on every body type and they also add a bit of that romantic sway movement in the photos - you know what I’m talking about! Although shorter dresses are just as beautiful in photos, keep in mind that if your dress is too short, we will be limited on the poses you can do.

If you choose to wear something more casual on the bottom, then think about dressing it up on top. A beautiful flowy top or lace accent can make your outfit look and feel special for this occasion.

If you’re an expecting mother, picking a dress that highlights your bump, and flatters your silhouette and figure is a must! Be on the look out for solid colored maxi and full length dresses that flair out starting right above the belly for the best look.

FOR HIM:

I know first hand that thinking about an outfit for the photo session might be overwhelming but I’m here to make it easy. For the most camera friendly look, long fitted pants such as dress pants, colored pants, or jeans and closed-toed shoes are a must. Don’t be scared to bring out all the accessories! They aren’t just for the ladies! Belts, watches, bowties, ties, pocket squares, colored socks, tie clips, suspenders, and vests add to your look and compliment your outfit. I definitely recommend layering which can consist of a vest, suspender, a sport coat, or maybe even a pull over!

 TIPS

  • Bring a pair of flats or comfortable shoes to wear when moving from place to place. Your feet will thank you later!

  • Because I love capturing detailed shots that involve your hands, (framing your face, holding hands, ring shots, holding the bump for maternity sessions, etc..) don’t forget to get your nails done and get your rings cleaned.

  • Please iron your clothes before our session or choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily. I charge extra (upon request) for wrinkle removal during retouching.

  • Nothing makes kids grouchy and uncooperative like being tired or hungry. To help provide good moods all around, make sure they are well-rested and well-fed!

  • For the extra wow factor you can incorporate accessories that will compliment the photoshoot such as fresh flowers, balloons, a picnic blanket + basket, hats, flower crowns, scarves, a bicycle, or anything that comes to mind!

  • For maternity sessions, here are some great ideas of props to bring: sonogram, name board, baby shoes, onesie, or any sentimental item of your choice!

  • If you’re prone to eye redness, please use eye drops before the session to prevent having bloodshot eyes.

  • To minimize the appearance of flyaway hairs in photos, spraying your hairbrush with hair spray and combing it through your hair can make a drastic difference.

  • For couple sessions, if wearing lipstick, please use smudge-proof lipstick to prevent smearing it on your partner.

  • Please lint roll your clothes prior to the session if you have pets or are wearing dark-colored clothing.
